The Courier have a story about plans to redevelop the seafront at West Links with a public/private partnership involving some of the businesses with property in the area. Plans include a possible extension of Kerrs Miniature Railway! If the "private" input was altruistic, as in times gone by (meaning virtually donated for public use).... I would agree..... However it ends up as land being swallowed up by the private sector and developed to serve those that can afford to "pay" for the amenities..... and as the years go by restricting access to great swathes of what was once public land...
Sorry, but I think all development should be paid for by a Council budget.
On this one I am positive I am not wrong... Private Initiatives all over show this to be the case!!

Kerr Miniature Railway have said the following on their Facebook page today:

The railway has been involved in the 're-development' of West Links Park, and included in that, it was suggested that we moved closer to where the bulk of people were in the park (i.e the snack bar area). So we are extending the line to double it's length all the way along to the paddling pool where upon and three road station and turntable will be built! Please comment your thoughts or 'like'.

I still think it's a great idea, but have enquired who would own the land of the extended portion of track.

At present what with the closure of so many shops, stores etc. I think any investment, be it private or public should be welcomed, really don't think we are in a great position to be fussy.............. Bob

Kerr´s "type" of investment welcome.... lets say land needed "leased" for a suitable length of time at peppercorn rent and lease extension options ok... great

Timeshift not being fussy leads to bad deals and things going bye bye forever. The greenland belongs to the town and it should remain that way. With the council clearly wanring to flogg of the football grpunds , no doubt to Crappy Stewart Milne, the loss of more land which are football pitches too should not be accepted.

Think that is absolutely great news... A possibility of 1/2 million quid.... and with private initiative inputs/partnerships as well... When and if approved I look forward to seeing what the projects shall be..... Looks like our local Councillors have really been working hard to have got this far.

Although the misprinted 500 million quid would have been better rolling on the floor

Hope there is a skatepark included for the teenagers and a supervised one at that. They should make it a membership only one as the sense of ownership and form a committee between the teenagers themselves to run it might be the only way it would get properly taken care of.

Im not having a go at teenagers in general as this applies to adults as well if they own their homes they tend to take more care of them(but not all adults some where just brought up right lol).

Pity to read about Councillors "in-fighting" on possible investment at "the links"... Although some Councillors are saying they are not against the proposal they are questioning the amount for the project in these times of austerity, especially with the forecast of a 30+ million pound deficit over next four years..!!
I hope majority of Councillors are for the investment and it is voted for... Arbroath sorely needs this investment to get our image back as many areas have been left without proper funding for years!!

What??? Surely there are some other "bits" to fit?? That looks real dangerous! A double open ended accident waiting to happen! or, am I being over-cautious and thats what kids would love?

The ramp (not sure what you should call it) has been doing the rounds of Angus for a few years now; the kids that use it seem happy enough with it

Thanks for that Amy... It is here at "links" until 24th July and back again in October... Well it seems to be tried and tested...

Seems work is about to begin on the West Links play area (June 6th).

A well used facility deserving an upgrade in my opinion. The timing of the development is peculiar though, why take it down days into the playparks busiest time of year instead of in autumn, winter or spring?

Good news - although they are going to be working thought the summer the Herald article does say that the existing play park is to stay open until September - so that's something I guess!! tongue

Only here do the council carryout major works to a tourist attraction during tourist season. Personally why do this only to let it rot like they have done with the existing stuff.
