I imagine also the first to feature were the royals and aristocracy. How far back are you hoping one might exist?

All falling to bits... Circa 1850/60 shall have to look them out one of these days... No photographs then, only drawings... Days of Tom Thumb as there are adverts for his shows... Also some Chinese drawings of executions where they garroted condemned prisoners.. runs like a cartoon with a description.. grotesque!!

The "timeline" suggests 1880 as first photograph printed in a newspaper.. Fortunately we had T. Buncle & Co. who were great local printers and eventually ran "The Arbroath Guide".. The Company produced great lithographs of sketches (some very famous now) and I am sure would have moved to printing photographs quite quickly. If you have not been to library yet...
Angus newspaper titles are available on microfilm in Angus libraries. Each local title is available in its own town. Arbroath Herald 1889 - 1978 microfilm, Copies 1979 to date Indexed to 1985 Arbroath Guide 1844 - 1978 microfilm
