My father has been looking into our family history, but has not got very far. My grandfather was born in West Street, Arbroath and was James Cargill Swankie. He and my grandmother Helen (Nee Smith) moved down south some time in the 1920s to east of London. I'd love to get more details of the Swankie family history in Arbroath.

I am trying to find out about my great-great-grandfather FRAZER ANDERSON born around 1805 in Arbroath. He was a master baker and there are family rumours that he owned (or at least worked) in a Baker's shop in Arbroath. He later moved to London as a journeyman baker and married Mary Prince from Stepney. If anyone has any information about a Baker's shop in Arbroath or any mention of a Frazer Anderson I would be extremely grateful. Many thanks John Anderson

I find this site extraordinarily helpful. Thankyou for making Scotland so interesting! I am looking for any information about George Cruickshank, my ancestor, who was minister in Arbroath 1738-48. He had five children. He went on to be minister in Kinnell. His wife died tragically in childbirth in 1751 and he died two years later. His wife was Isobel Wallace daughter of Thomas Wallace and Mary Scott. She was born in 1718. I believe the Wallaces were very much an Arbroath family - can anyone tell me about them? The children were brought up in an attic in Arbroath at great personal sacrifice and in desperate circumstances by Margaret Matthew a faithful family servant, can anyone tell me more about her?

I am interested in any information regarding my Christie forebears who lived in Arbroath from at least the late 1700's (possibly much earlier) and who were nearly all flax mill workers. My paternal grandfather, George Johnston(e) Christie (b. 1884) emigrated to New Zealand (where I was born) around 1910 after his father James (b. 1857) divorced his wife Barbara (nee Finlayson) in about 1907. James' parents were James Christie (b. 1817) and Mary Fettes and they had 4 other children: Robert, Isabel, Mary Ann and Agnes. That James' parents were Robert Christie (b. ~1780 I think) and Isabell Whitelaw. Would love any more info or to hear from anyone that is descended from this line of Christie's, especially in Arbroath.

One boy was William and he married Ann Forbes Gleig Christie. William was a ship Master. They had children and one daughter Jane Ann (B14.6.1856) married Donald Lamond. They had at least 2 sons Stanley William and Andrew Lawrence Lamond. I believe the Lamonds moved to the Glasgow area. I think Jane Phillip may have died fairly young and Andrew could have had 2 more boys to Margaret Wallace Keinloch -George born 1851 and Andrew born 1858. They probably did not even know of each other. She died 1867 at age 42. Any of this ring a bell with families in the Arbroath/ Dundee area.

To: Andrea Renny, looking for parents of Alexeander Renny. I can't help you with the parents, but my grandfather was Charles Baird Renny, a football player who served with the Black Watch and emigrated to Canada. My father was Hugh Anderson Renny and during WW II he visited relatives in or around Arbroath. He never went back and I never found out who the were. I have limited information about my grandfather and his family, but it would appear that we are relatives looking for the same information. If possible would you share with me what you have found?? I'm afraid that I don't have much to share in return, but can help with a bit of what went on in Canada. Charles B. Renny

Looking for living relatives in the Arbroath area. My great-grandfather, John Thomson, was born there in 1834. Married Louisa Waddell in Sunderland, U.K., and came to the U.S. (Chicago, Ill., and then Janesville, Wis.) in 1855. He died in 1862, when my grandfather was six. John Thomson's father was James Thomson, a 'merchant tailor' in Arbroath; his mother was Helen (Thomson) Thomson. James and Helen (Thomson) Thomson had the following children; William (b. abt. 1826), James (b. abt. 1828), John, Jane (b. abt 1836), Helen (b. abt. 1836). William and Helen purportedly came to the U.S. also, but don't know if they remained, and if so, where. After Helen died (before 1841), James married Agnes Findlay (they had no children), then Mary Mason (or Manson?) (b. abt. 1823). James and Mary had three children: George Black Thomson (b. abt 1852, d. 24 Dec 1932, m. Isabella Walker), Elizabeth (b. abt 1853, m. Collins?) and Alexander Matthew (b. abt 1855). My great-grandfather loaned money that his father had loaned to him, to a cousin who traveled to America on the same ship. Because of his early death (by drowning), the connection to the family in Scotland was lost; John Thomson was posthumously disinherited by his father, apparently because of the debt that was not repaid. I and my family will be coming to Scotland in August 2008 for the Clan MacThomas Gathering in Glenshee, after which we will go to Arbroath and area so I can do research. Descendants of any of the individuals mentioned above can contact me at mchomie@triwest.net, or by mail at P.O. Box 311, Whitehall, WI 54773

Is there anyone who can tell me if she perhaps married a local man, or perhaps died in Arbroath. She may be in a local family tree. She was born in Greenwich, England in 1880. I think one way or another that she stayed in Scotland because I have met all the other Great`Aunts but not her. Would be so grateful for any help with regards this. Thank you, Valerie.
